When shopping for a portable basketball system for your home, price is usually a factor that comes into play, along with quality, durability, and looks.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money but still get an affordable yet quality hoop, a great option for you is the Lifetime 1531 Portable Basketball System. Solidly in the low priced category, the Lifetime 1531 Portable Basketball Hoop make a great starter hoop for your family, and allows you hours of play and tons of shots without a load of money to spend.
Let’s take a look at some of the features included with the Lifetime 1531 Portable Basketball system. While the price point is low, you don’t have to sacrifice all of the features and quality. This hoop features a 48 inch backboard, which is constructed with shatter resistant Makrolon polycarbonate.
While it is not the strength of an aluminum backboard, for the price this Makrolon polycarbonate can handle the job for most players with moderate use. The clear backboard has colored graphic details, and is surrounded with a high-density polyethylene for protection around the edge.
Lifetime claims that the backboard can hold up through vigorous use, and offers their 5 year warranty to back that claim up.
Like many other portable basketball systems, the Lifetime 1531’s Portable Basketball Hoop’s height can be raised and lowered according to your needs. The hoop can be adjusted from 7.5 feet to 10 feet in 6 inch increments; we found the hoop to be easy to raise by teens and adults, although children would likely need some help. By using a pole or a broom stick, we found the hoop to be no problem to raise and lower as needed.
The pole that hold the hoop is 3 inches in diameter and is made from powder-coated steel for rust resistance and durability. One design flaw of the pole, however, is that is does not come with a cap for the top of the pole; the inside of the pole is not powder-coated, which means with no cap protection, the inside of the pole can rust and weather when exposed to outdoor elements. An easy solution to this problem is to find or create a cover of your own, but if that is not an option for you, this may not be the best hoop for your home.
Lifetime hoops are known for their Slam-It rims, which are solid steel rims attached to the backboard with double-mounted springs for a high quality rim dunk after dunk. Even at such an affordable price, the Lifetime 1531 Portable Basketball System comes with a solid steel Slam-It rim, so dunking, layups, and tough rebounds will be no problem for this hoop.
The base of a portable basketball system is of great importance, as a good base allows the hoop to stay strong through high winds and weather, as well as tough games with minimal shaking.
While the Lifetime 1531 Portable Basketball Hoop comes with a 31 gallon base which can be filled with sand or water, various reviewers commented on the base being cheap and leaky. Some mentioned it leaked water when filled, and others talked of the cheap, thin plastic of which it is constructed. If you
plan on leaving the base empty, this wouldn’t be a problem; even with sand leaking wouldn’t be as big of a deal, but if you plan to fill your base with water, this Lifetime hoop may not be your best choice.
For the most part, assembly of the Lifetime 1531 Portable Basketball System is fairly easy and not too time consuming, given you have the correct tools prepared. Lifetime features helpful customer service if you come upon missing pieces or questions, and their 5 year limited warranty comes into play on many of the pieces and parts.
